Truck Attack on New Year’s Day in New Orleans Leaves 15 Dead, Dozens Injured

New Orleans: Tragedy struck the heart of New Orleans early on New Year’s Day when a truck plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and injuring 35 others. The attack occurred during celebrations following the Sugar Bowl college football playoff game, leaving the city in shock and mourning.

The suspect, identified by the FBI as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was driving a white Ford pickup truck when he rammed through the crowded street. After halting the vehicle, Jabbar exited and opened fire on responding police officers, injuring two. In a subsequent gunfight, law enforcement officers fatally shot Jabbar. The injured officers are reported to be in stable condition, according to Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick.

ISIS-Inspired Attack Confirmed
Investigations revealed that Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran from Texas, had posted videos on social media hours before the attack, proclaiming his allegiance to ISIS and expressing a desire to kill. A flag associated with the terror group was discovered in the rented vehicle used in the attack. U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed the incident appeared to be inspired by ISIS, calling it a “tragic act of violence.” The President urged the public to avoid premature conclusions while the investigation continues.

Security Measures Intensified
In response to the attack, authorities conducted a thorough search of the French Quarter for explosives, as weapons and suspected explosive materials were found in Jabbar’s vehicle. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill reassured residents that no further threats had been identified and that safety measures, including increased police patrols, would remain in place until the conclusion of Mardi Gras festivities on March 4th.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell condemned the attack, labeling it a “terrorist act” and pledging full cooperation with state and federal agencies to ensure the safety of the community. “Our hearts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time,” she stated.

Community Mourns and Rebuilds
The attack has cast a somber shadow over New Orleans, a city renowned for its vibrant celebrations. Vigils are planned across the city to honor the victims, while local officials emphasize resilience and unity in the face of tragedy.
